Day 16 – The Masses

I have never taken the time to read the poem “The New Colossus” that is enshrined on our Statue of Liberty, though I’ve heard snippets of it throughout my life. Add to that, I’m not really a fan of poetry. But, sometimes, when the moon lines up with Pluto, I can enjoy a verse or two. I guess today is one of those rare days, and I’m proud to know that these verses helped solidify our Lady as a welcome host to the world’s castaways.

“Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”

Fortunately for the world, they won’t have to make the long trek to the US in order to breathe free. Our partners are at work across the globe, bringing clean air in their wake. And we have one partner who likes to focus on the masses, InStove. Wherever people come together, they tend to eat. Churches, schools, community centers. Being in a community is at the heart of being human. InStove brings a very unique solution to those places where people gather and yet still cook on the three rocks. In this video, they travel to Haiti and we get to hear from a cook herself on how InStove has changed her daily life.

And they don’t stop there, they even have a solutions for regions where wood is scarce, expensive, or harvested in unsustainable ways. Meet their briquette press, a wonderful low-tech solution.
